In the event that you should experience transmission problems or even complete failure, it is important to understand what is going on and what to look for. At Mastertech Transmissions, Inc., we want to make servicing your vehicle’s transmission as simple and hassle-free as possible. Below are some frequently asked questions. If your question isn’t listed below, please do not hesitate to contact our team of experienced transmission techs at (316) 269-9590.

How do I know if I have a transmission problem?

Most modern vehicles have ways to let you know if you are having an issue with the transmission. Some vehicles have check transmission lights. Some vehicles will indicate a transmission problem by flashing the OD (over drive) button. Others just show a standard check engine light. If you feel something unusual in the shifting and it is accompanied by some warning light on your dashboard, it is best to get it checked.

Does a lit up Check Engine Light mean I have a transmission problem?

It might. If you see the check engine light on your dashboard light up or flash, there could be one of any number of problems with your vehicle, including a problem with your transmission. Do not overlook this important warning. That light is often an early indicator something may be seriously wrong with your vehicle. You can bring your vehicle directly to us at our Wichita shop and we will run a FREE DIAGNOSTIC to test whether you have a transmission problem or something else.

Can my standard auto shop handle transmission repairs?

Whether or not an auto body shop that handles overall vehicle repairs can handle your transmission problem is dependent upon how big of a problem you have. Many can service your transmission and make minor repairs when the damage is minor. But if your vehicle requires something more extensive like a transmission rebuild, most auto body shops don’t have the expertise and necessary equipment to handle that level of service. Here at Mastertech, transmission work is all we do. So you can be sure the technicians fixing your car here have the most complete training and experience to fully fix whatever is causing your vehicle to have transmission problems.

What do I do when I see leaking transmission fluid?

Transmissions must have fluid to function properly. This fluid is generally a bright red fluid. If you notice several “splotches” or “drips”, that may indicate a small leak possibly with a connection, line or small external seal. A huge leak would indicate a major seal failure. If you notice just a few small drips, you are likely fine to drive your vehicle a transmission repair shop. If a large amount of fluid has leaked out, you will want to have it towed in for repair.

Do I need a transmission flush?

Transmission flushes are a great way to maintain a vehicles transmission fluid and promote long-lasting life for your vehicle. The general recommendation is to flush your transmission every 2 years or 30,000 miles. Waiting until a transmission is malfunctioning may be too late. Once a transmission has begun to display symptoms, it may be too late for a transmission flush to help fix the problem.

How do I know if I need a transmission repair or a full rebuild?

A transmission repair is needed when only the bare minimum amount of parts is needed to get your transmission working again. Usually just a few parts are replaced and there is no need to rebuild the entire transmission. This is more affordable than a transmission rebuild, but sometimes the damage is too much for a simple transmission repair to be an option.

A transmission rebuild is when the entire transmission is taken apart. The components are inspected, and any worn or damaged parts are replaced. The transmission is reassembled and installed back into your vehicle. Each rebuild process is customized to the vehicle. A transmission rebuild are specialized jobs and require transmission specialists to undertake.

What is a Re-manufactured Transmission?

A re-manufactured transmission is a transmission that has been rebuilt in a factory-style setting. That does not mean it is a dealer factory. These re-manufactured transmissions are generally built the exact same way we would rebuild one in our Mastertech shop here in Wichita. The only difference is truly the term. Both will result in transmissions that match factory specifications and likely to even include upgraded components. Re-manufactured is often presented as a higher-end option, but there is no difference between a re-manufactured (built in factory setting) and rebuild (built on site of transmission facility).

How do I know who to trust with my transmission work?

Only trust a transmission shop that is certified by ATRA, the Automatic Transmission Rebuilder Association. You can search their Shop Finder to find a certified transmission shop near you. Mastertech Transmissions, Inc isn’t just one of the few shops listed by ATRA in Wichita and the surrounding towns, we are one of the very few who are part of ATRA’s Golden Rule Warranty program. Transmissions with a Golden Rule Warranty are rebuilt to, or exceed, ATRA’s rebuild requirements.
